The Wearable Art Awards is not a fashion show, it is a multi-media performance where the human body becomes a living, breathing, moving canvas. We are looking for more than a “pretty dress.” We are asking you to go deep into your imagination to create a wearable piece of art that challenges what most consider to be wearable, or everyday fashion.

The Wearable Art Awards is committed to challenging artists of all mediums to push their imaginations to create evocative, imaginative and thought provoking sculpture for the human body.

CATEGORIES

An entry must fall into one of the following three form-based categories. Cash prizes will be presented to category winners as determined by the jury.

Complete Outfit«

«Entries must be a full outfit to be considered for this category. To be considered a full outfit, the entry should cover a model’s upper and lower body.

In addition to competing for a category win, entries will also be eligible for the following cash prize awards as determined by the jury:

Langley Community Farmers Market

The Langley Community Farmers Market is holding a craft day at the market next week July 27th and we would love to invite the Langley Spinners and Weavers guild to have a booth for the day. This is free of charge for you to hand out information, do quick demos and exhibit some of your work. The market runs every Wednesday fom 2-6pm and we would love to have you come out! Please let me know if this is possible 😉

Fleece For Sale

My son’s boss has nine sheep on his property in Langley and they were  shorn last week. The wool is for sale, I believe that they are good  size fleece, I don’t know their weight. They would like to see $30.00  per fleece. There is one white one and the rest are beautiful shades  of grey and browns and they are all Romneys.

Classes at Place des Arts

Fall 2011 classes at Place des Arts

Place des Arts is an integrated arts centre in Coquitlam, BC offering classes and workshops in a variety of fibre arts. Our fibre studio is the only one in the Lower Mainland offering a variety of table and floor looms as well as spinning wheels. Our fibre technician, Irene Weisner, has over 30 years experience as a fibre artist and teacher.

Place des Arts offers classes and workshops in weaving, spinning, dyeing, tapestry, felting, knitting and basketry. Fall 2011 classes begin the week of September 19, 2011. Featured in our Fall workshops is “Appalachian Egg Basket” and a variety of Christmas workshops such as “Wire Crochet Christmas Stars”, “Christmas Miniature Baskets”, and “Felted Christmas Ornaments”. Private lessons are also available.

Open studio time, subject to room availability, is available between classes free of charge for registered students. Weaving students are also able to take home small table looms for practice between classes.

Study Weaving in Laos – Southeast Asia

99% of Lao textiles, which are regarded as some of the most complicated and beautiful in the world have symbolic meaning — mostly draggon or Naga representation.  Lao textiles are produced by three main weaving techniques: Ikat, or tie-dye, Chok, which produces dense raised patterns, like brocade, and tapestry.  One also encounters embroidery, batik, and crochet.  Other optional classes include basket weaving, batik art, silk making from cocoons, and bamboo , and organic dying.
