Fabric Weaving

This past month we have been working on fabric weaving. This idea was generated for Quilting Arts September edition which presented the works of Jude Hill see the post below. Fabric was ripped into stripes so that there was a raw edge to the fabric then the pieces where woven together using a ruler as a guide.

To secure the woven fabric together we then used the electric sewing machine to stitch over the fabric. In one piece Elaine wave cut a piece of hand painted fabric then cut the piece in half to weave the two pieces together.

We also embellished some of the pieces using buttons.

Tatting

Please check the Murrayville (FVRL) & Cloverdale (SPL) libraries for tatting info. I am returning everything that I could get out of both systems today but we need to keep them in circulation so they don’t get deleted! In the Surrey catalogue I found 2 videos by Mildred Clark (she has several books on tatting) with Nancey Harvey (of tapestry weaving fame!) both videos were full of surprises… ;~)

Tatting I — The Basics which shows a much easier way to learn than I have found in any illustration in any book. It also has some tricks that were totally new to me including how to join — great info!

Tatting II — Beyond the Basics & it is full of good ideas, many stitch variations, & new techniques that I have never read in any pattern. It also shows how to needle tat or crochet tat & something similar using a Japanese needle.
The other pleasant surprise that I found this week was by searching for tatting on Ravelry — there are several groups! Take a peek when you get a chance.

October meeting

Well the mixed media group is getting back together for this fall. The first meeting will be at Elaine’s on the 10th of October at 10:00. Please check the membership book for address and phone number. RSVP so Elaine has an idea how many will be able to make this session.

For the first session we will be exploring weaving with fabric. The idea comes from the work of Jude Hill (Be sure to check out her what if blog it has some interesting examples) and the article in Quilting Arts August/September edition. There are some videos on Jude Hill’s site that show how she weaves with the fabric. Another example of weaving with bias tape is shown on Lazy Girl Blog with a nice set of instructions.

Jenny Dean’s Wild Colour

Jenny Dean is the author of Wild Colour on natural dyeing, unfortunately the book is out of print….. But Jenny has started a blog and often talks about dyeing tips and recipes. The latest post is on dyeing with fungi and she has a number of great images showing the colours that she was able to achieve.

Mason Sewing Machine is proud to host Hilary Rice, a nationally acclaimed fibre artist. Hilary will be sharing her wonderful artwork with us over the two hours of her trunk show “Along the Silk Road”:

It is said that all things are connected. Each of us moves through our lives, one thing leading to another, the way the silk journey of long ago was a continuous journey. While selling silk was part of it, it also acted as a conduit for thoughts and ideas.
